Network matrix in class
The Network matrix works on its own, for anyone. With a class or a workshop it does one more thing well: it shows where people agree and where they split before anyone has had a chance to sway anyone.
Running it in class.
- Alone. List the nodes, then sign in on the Teacher page, create a class for round one and post its student link. Each student rates on their own under a first name or class code and presses Send to class. Collect work gathers everything into the Class view, which shows where the class agrees and where it splits before anyone has had a chance to sway anyone. Untick any send that shouldn’t count, such as a test. Set the design center, its attribute groups and any sub-network nodes before you copy the student link, and every student starts with them, so the whole class works from the same words.
- In pairs. Create a second class for round two and post its student link. Partners swap codes from the Share tab, and one of them opens the round two link, choosing Keep my map if asked. They paste both codes into the Class view, which outlines in red the cells where they disagree, and press Make the class map to load one map they can both work on. They talk the red cells through, change them until they agree, type a pair codename as the map name and press Send to class.
- As a class. Open the round two class from the Teacher page and collect the pair maps. Start with the links listed under Talk about these first, and set the result beside round one to see what the conversations in pairs changed. The class map is saved to the class as you change it, so it opens the same on any computer where you’re signed in.
Pairs work better than larger groups, which tend to carry one or two passengers. Ask students to use a first name or a class code, never a last name. The Class view hides names until you choose to show them, so it can go on the projector. Use class links on chock.llc, not on a preview of the site.
Without signing in.
A workshop doesn’t need a class. On the tool’s Share tab, under For classes and workshops, copy the link for your group so everyone starts from the same nodes. When they’re done, everyone copies their code and one person pastes them all into the Class view. It does the same comparison and can make the combined map, and nothing is sent anywhere.
What a class keeps.
When a teacher runs a class, pressing Send to class stores three things on chock.llc: the name you typed (a first name or class code), your map, and the time you sent it. No email, no IP address. The teacher sees it after signing in, and everything in the class is deleted on the class’s end date, or sooner if the teacher deletes the class. If you clear your browser, open the student link again and press Get back what I sent.
A student link carries only the list of nodes, and the Class view reads the codes pasted into it without sending them anywhere.
